In theory, cryptocurrencies are meant to be decentralized, their wealth distributed between many parties on a blockchain. Ownership is becoming more concentrated, as witnessed by companies purchasing and holding them for price appreciation and investment fund managers buying them to hold in their funds.
Cryptocurrency networks display a lack of regulation that has been criticized as enabling criminals who seek to evade taxes and launder money. Money laundering issues are also present in regular bank transfers, however with bank-to-bank wire transfers for instance, the account holder must at least provide a proven identity.
In May 2018, Bitcoin Gold had its transactions hijacked and abused by unknown hackers. Exchanges lost an estimated $18m and bitcoin Gold was delisted from Bittrex after it refused to pay its share of the damages.
How to invest in cryptocurrency
If you are just starting out in crypto, we suggest that you limit your exposure to established cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. In general, staple coins are the best cryptos for beginners as they are widely available and highly liquid.
These tokens are available on various platforms, including OpenSea, Rarible, Foundation, and NBA Top Shot. The range of NFTs is vast, encompassing everything from digital art and music to virtual real estate and unique collectibles.
Crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs), which include exchange-traded notes (ETN) and index tracker certificates, are investment vehicles that trade on securities exchanges and track the price of an underlying crypto asset.
Some of the more popular smart contract-capable blockchains currently include Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Solana and Avalanche. Each of these has its own array of popular DApps, many of which are genuinely useful and secure, while others are less so. You’ll also need a separate wallet to interact with each.
