Attending an Empire of the Sun concert is truly a one-of-a-kind experience, and this show was no exception—it was, without a doubt, one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to nrfi rankings. From start to finish, EOTS delivered a mesmerizing performance that captivated the audience. Their live energy is absolutely phenomenal. Every minute of the concert was an immersive blend of music, visuals, and theatrics. The light show was dazzling, perfectly synchronized with their signature electro-pop sound. The background imagery added a surreal, dreamlike quality that made the performance feel like stepping into another world. Luke Steele’s wardrobe and makeup were the icing on the cake. His bold, avant-garde style was nothing short of “freaking cool,” and it added an extra layer of artistry to the entire spectacle. Every element, from the sound to the visuals, was meticulously crafted to create a unique, unforgettable experience. Empire of the Sun live is not just a concert—it’s a journey. If you ever have the chance to see them perform, don’t hesitate. It’s an electrifying show that will leave you wanting more.
The apocalyptic wartime setting and the climactic moment when Jim sees the distant white flash of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki gave Spielberg powerful visual metaphors «to draw a parallel story between the death of this boy’s innocence and the death of the innocence of the entire world». Spielberg reflected he «was attracted to the idea that this was a death of innocence, not an attenuation of childhood, which by my own admission and everybody’s impression of me is what my life has been. This was the opposite of Peter Pan. This was a boy who had grown up too quickly.» Other topics that Spielberg previously dealt with, and are presented in Empire of the Sun, include a child being separated from his parents (The Sugarland Express, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Color Purple, and Poltergeist) and World War II (1941, and Raiders of the Lost Ark). Spielberg explained «My parents got a divorce when I was 14, 15. The whole thing about separation is something that runs very deep in anyone exposed to divorce.»
Steele received global media attention following an interview he completed with music publication NME in August 2013 at the Sziget Festival in Budapest. During the interview, Steele compared Ice on the Dune with Daft Punk’s 2013 album release Random Access Memories, stating: «They had a great marketing campaign, but we’ve got better songs.» In 2014 the band performed at the Coachella Festival, headlining the Sahara Tent.

We LOVE Empire of the Sun music…BUT….we were disappointed that one of the band members didn’t show (and it was not mentioned at all even though apparent). Also there was a lot lip syncing and overdubbing. Guitar was live…vocals were not. Costumes good and crowd was plentiful…Hollywood Bowl always a good time.

Wow, they sure put on a show! This was the first time I had invested in getting a box at the Bowl. Since they are so expensive I have never been able to afford it, but this time the four of us went all in! The lead up to the concert was very smooth. We took the park and ride, plenty of room to park and the shuttles are quite nice. Getting in was easy, I love that we have the green pathway to walk up the hill now. Definitely helps with the crowds. It was easy to find our seats, and there were plenty of employees to help us with the table set up. The only down side was two of the check out stations at the Marketplace were out of order so the line was insane. We wanted to snack before the show and we ended up going right until the last minute when the show started. But overall the show was amazing, would do it again!

Now, in 1945, nearing the end of the Pacific War and World War II. Despite the terror and poor living conditions of the camp, Jim survives by establishing a trading network—which even involves the camp’s commander, Sergeant Nagata. Dr. Rawlins, the camp’s British doctor, becomes a father figure and teacher to Jim. One night after a bombing raid, Nagata orders the destruction of the prisoners’ infirmary as a reprisal but stops when Jim begs forgiveness. Through the barbed wire fencing, Jim befriends a Japanese teenager who is a trainee pilot.

The site’s critical consensus reads, «One of Steven Spielberg’s most ambitious efforts of the 1980s, Empire of the Sun remains an under-rated gem in the director’s distinguished filmography.» Metacritic calculated an average score of 62 out of 100 based on 22 reviews, indicating «generally favorable reviews». Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of «B+» on an A+ to F scale.

Empire of the Sun is one of the best anti-war statements I’ve ever seen on the big screen, with a criminally underrated performance from a young Christian Bale, who plays an energetic and virtuous English boy in an incredible coming-of-age story set in WW2 China. I really don’t like using the word underrated often, but for people who yet haven’t seen Empire of the Sun yet, I cannot recommend it enough.
