Game 2 world series
I wouldn’t say Framber Valdez is cruising, but he’s getting it done. Three innings, and none has been perfect. But he has allowed just one baserunner per inning – a walk in both the first and second and a single in the third. And he has struck out 5 Phillies.
Some might view this as Flaherty making an “excuse” to allowing a homer to Stanton, but that doesn’t really matter. The Dodgers are light on starting pitching options, and it seems very likely they’ll need the right-hander to make at least one more start.
Yamamoto is looking stronger in this postseason after returning from an arm injury in September. World series game
The Yankees in Game 5 barged to an early 5-0 lead, but the Dodgers punched back in the fifth to tie it – a five-run outburst aided greatly by three Yankee errors in the frame. The Yankees took the lead back, but the Dodgers pushed across two runs in the eighth for a lead that would hold. Starter Walker Buehler, pressed into relief duty thanks to a fatigued Dodger bullpen, worked a clean bottom of the ninth for the save, the first of his big-league career.
The Yankees got a runner on first thanks to an Alex Verdugo single, but Gleyber Torres grounded out to third to end the inning three pitches later. Max Muncy made a nice play fielding the ball on a short hop.
“It’s really tough,” Phillips said. “I mean, this is a historic week in Dodgers history, and I want nothing more than to compete and be a part of this. … I’m very disheartened by how things have gone for me personally.”
The right-hander was one of the Dodgers’ top relievers this season, and he did not give up a run in 6 2/3 innings over five National League Division Series and Championship Series games, but a shoulder injury rendered him unfit for the World Series against the New York Yankees, and he was left off the roster.
How will the bullpens line up after the starter?Yankees: Everyone should be available for Game 2 except for Nestor Cortes, as the Yankees are hesitant to pitch him on back-to-back days considering his left flexor elbow strain. Luke Weaver threw 19 pitches over 1 2/3 innings in Game 1, and that was the heaviest workload for a Bombers reliever. Clay Holmes (5 pitches), Tommy Kahnle (8 pitches) and Jake Cousins (14 pitches) also saw action.
